How To Beat The Winter Blues
Whether or not you deal with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) or not, you most likely feel the winter blues at some point throughout the winter season. After all, it's cold for SO long, especially in the northern states like NY, where I live. I wanted to make this post to hopefully give some ideas, or suggestions for those who lose sight of the wintertime (like me).
How To Beat The Winter Blues
Stay Active
I think this is extremely important because though there are plenty of times when my body is tired or I want to be lazy and skip a workout, I think it really does make me personally feel better and it's something that has become a mood booster for me! This could simply be a short walk outside (weather permitting, of course), an indoor bike ride, or a full workout. It's just simply all about being active and moving your body.
Keep A Routine
This "tip" applies to all the things. For example, your "regular" routine such as work, activities, and social but also to keep routines such as your sleep routine regular. I think keeping your schedules and life aligned and organized helps maintain a peace of mind and ultimately, this keeps your body healthy.
Light Therapy
I think this one is super important & can be done at any time during your day. Since it is usually always very dark and gloomy for long periods of time during the winter, I find any sunlight or bright day or area to really affect and lift my mood. Light therapy can be done simply by standing in direct or indirect sunlight in the morning, or by investing in a light therapy lamp (like this one).

Nourish Your Body
By this, I mean really try to be mindful of what you're consuming. If you're eating junk food and drinking soda all day, then drinking alcohol every night then you're more likely than not going to feel less good than if you were eating balanced meals and hydrating your body throughout the day. *I am by no means saying to never splurge, go out to eat, or have a few drinks - I'm simply stating that doing so every day will not leave your body feeling the best it could feel.
Take On A New Hobby
This is something that will keep you entertained, busy, and productive. You can choose essentially anything. For example, knitting or reading are very accessible and relaxing hobbies. You could also pick something else of interest such as DIY projects.
Spend Time With Your Friends
This may seem obvious, but a lot of us adults are very busy and often get caught up in life that a social life and social events and outings get put on the back burner. I think social interaction is essential. Typically, I've noticed I spend a lot more time with my friends during the winter months. Usually, people are less busy, so it is easier to get together and this will likely raise your mood!
Plan Events/Trips/Vacations
This is exactly what it seems like it is. Plan a vacation or trip so you have something to look forward to or get to escape the cold. Or take the time and plan ahead for an event that you know you will be attending or throwing. For example, if you know you host Easter, in your downtime, plan the meal you will cook (try something different). This will also help you when the time comes and make it easier on you.
I hope this helps someone & thank you for reading.
